ABB secures major contract from bp in Azerbaijan.

Zurich/Sangachal - ABB is being tasked with electrifying the Sangachal Terminal, a natural gas processing and oil production plant in Azerbaijan. Connecting the plant to the country's power grid will allow the gas turbines to be decommissioned. To this end, ABB has received a major contract from the operating British oil and gas company bp.

ABB has now been commissioned by bp to electrify the 688-hectare Sangachal Terminal in Azerbaijan after signing a five-year framework agreement in September 2024. According to a press release issued by the Swiss energy and automation group, this ABB project at one of the world’s largest oil and gas terminals will still take around 20 months to complete. For this, ABB will deliver and integrate four synchronous condensers specially developed for this site. These will facilitate the decommissioning of the existing gas turbines.

ABB explains that its integrated solution will significantly reduce the number of synchronous condensers required for the terminal. In so doing, this significantly cuts the overall project costs too. The ABB Ability System 800xA decentralized control system is reportedly to be used as the interface to the synchronous condensers, with the aim of ensuring monitoring and control on the part of plant operators.

The scope of the contract ranges from initial system studies and detailed planning, all the way through to installation and commissioning. In this way, ABB states, its electrification and automation solutions will play a key role in maintaining the stability and continuity of the Sangachal terminal’s performance. Moreover, with the increasing integration of renewable energies, its synchronous condensers will play an ever more important role in maintaining the stability of power grids.

“We are delighted to provide site-specific electrification and automation solutions to support bp’s efforts to decarbonize the energy ecosystem in a region where we have had a significant presence for over 25 years”, comments Per Erik Holsten, President of the ABB Division Energy Industries. ce/mm
